Jahorina Ultra Trail 2019
Last weekend of July is traditionally booked for Jahorina Ultra Trail. It is the first and biggest Bosnian trail running competition whose fifth, jubilee edition will be held on July 26-28, 2019. Four races of different length, Mini, Midi, Maxi, and Ultra Trail, will take place on trails connecting Jahorina with Ravna mountain, Romania and Trebević. The courses are navigated along the most beautiful parts of the mountains and connect attractions such as Jahorina ski slope, narrow-gauge railway, via ferrata and Novak’s cave on Mt Romania, the spring and canyon of Miljacka river with dozens of short tunnels, bob sleigh track and the ridge of Mt Trebević and even the famous tourist attraction, Baščaršija. All four races are awarded ITRA points. Three races (Mini, Maxi and Ultra) have a circular track while the most popular and most impressive Midi Trail becames even more attractive for the jubilee edition.
What Jahorina Ultra Trail offers
This year, start/finish line is relocated at the most beautiful part of Jahorina – Heaven’s Valley (Rajska dolina), which is why two races (Mini and Midi) are a bit longer now. Mini Trail is a 17 km long track, ideal for fast runners and beginners in trail running. Big news is that this race now brings 1 ITRA point. In past years, many participants had run Midi Trail on Saturday and then Mini Trail on Sunday which for them was a fantastic back-to-back training or racing because there were also those, like the Serbian runner Aleksandra Burkanović, Croatian runner Ante Živković or Macedonian Marjan Boneva who climbed the winning podium of both races. Midi Trail from this year is 38 km long and is a real treat for nature lovers who want a challenge after which they will be ready to go out, hang out on the mountain and enjoy other activities. Midi Trail finishers collect 2 ITRA points. Finally, Midi Trail, which starts in Baščaršija in Sarajevo, also got a route threaded to the top of Jahorina so this year participants of all four races will be able to enjoy the views of Ogorjelica summit and run across Gola (Bare) Jahorina. 69km-long Maxi Trail (3 ITRA points) is for fast ultra runners or those who will, for the first time, try the ultra format because there is not much elevation and is not overwhelming. Ultra Trail (4 ITRA points) is for experienced trail runners. With a length of 101km, it offers a sequence of very diverse sections, a real antithesis of monotony which intensifies the race experience even more.
A word from the organizer
Through race organization and good media relations, Sanja Kavaz, JUT Race Director, has done a lot in terms of the promotion of the event itself, but also on expansion of this, relatively, new sport. She highlights: “We became some kind of locomotive for the further development of this sport in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This year, gathered in Balkan Outdoor Association, we’ll be doing our best to prepare and organize the fifth edition of JUT as the best and the largest so far thus celebrating our first small anniversary. Last year we had over 470 participants from 29 countries, which shows that we are on the right track to position our race among the most attractive events of this kind in the region. We have made the concept appealing to our guests because we give them a chance to experience Jahorina in its full splendor in the summer, to discover the beauty of three more mountains, run along the bob sleigh track on Trebević which is our greatest advantage, because runners don’t have the opportunity to experience anything like that anywhere in the world. In addition, three of our trails traverse the ridge and top of Trebević, thus giving them the opportunity for a scenic view the whole Sarajevo Valley together with the surrounding mountains. Those who participate at the Midi Trail get to know Baščaršija and run past the jewels of the architectural heritage such as Sebilj (wooden fountain), the Town Hall (Vijećnica), Goat’s Bridge (Kozja ćuprija). Apart from cultural and historical, JUT also promotes the rich Olympic heritage of the Sarajevo region, which is why the Olympic Committee of Bosnia and Herzegovina has been our special partner from the very beginning”.
Why runners like JUT
A valuable package awaits all JUT participants. In addition to quality technical t-shirts, runners receive a valuable gift from the organizer, vouchers for Jelen Beer and a finisher’s meal at the finish line, as well as the ski lift ride to the very summit of Jahorina. All finishers receive a medal at the finish line. Jahorina is to be visited with friends or family during an extended weekend at least because, apart from visiting the Olympic mountain of Jahorina, everybody should seize the opportunity to spend at least one day in Sarajevo or visit nearby picnic areas.
